WHAT
WE GOT UP TO IN 2009
Last year Flynn was
appointed Editor of this newsletter and I
think he would have approved of Malarky
taking over the role this year.
Malarky has become
extremely famous this year with a half
page article in the Jersey Evening Post
showing his magnificant portrait done by
Cate Hamilton

Gail and Cate with
Malarky and his portrait

The finished
portrait which is available from Cate
If that was not
enough he also appears and has a receipe
named after him in a book called 'A La
Bark Baking' written by Kris Owen where,
on pages 10 and 11, you can try out
Malarky's Minty Mouthfuls. Copies of this
book may be obtained from us at the
Sanctuary just give us a ring on 742619
or email us. They would make nice
pressies and cost just £7.99.

Right it's over to
Malarky for the rest of the years news.
Hi there everyone,
I just want you to
know that I haven't let all this fame go
to my head unlike Gump who arrived a
couple of months ago and thinks he owns
the joint still he's only a youngster,
he'll learn. He only arrived in September
but is proving to be very popular with
the public. We know he will get into the
right pecking order soon so we just let
him carry on.
Right now where was
I !
2009, well a very
mixed year, highs and lows so lets start
with the former.
At long last the
trailer was decorated, gosh did mum, dad
and Alison fuff about with it - thought
they would never decide who would take
centre stage but in the end Arrie was
immortalised on the front with our pal
Casper on the opposite side. Our new logo
went on and we were ready to 'rock and
roll'.

Our new mode of
transport
There were a few
hiccups en route but it made it's debut
at Maufant fete in June. Must admit it
was an embarressment watching mum guiding
dad out of the gates with the trailer,
traffic queued back to Quennevais - times
like this me and the gang would like to
pretend we weren't with them. Then of
course there was the time dad hit the
wall - oh boy all hell let loose at that
time. Couple of months down the line dad
is getting better at it he's got driving
back in down to a fine art but reversing
out - well the least said about that the
better!!!
Prior to that Mont
Nicolle school came up trumps once again
doing a cake day for us and donating the
proceeds. Wiz and Silks well they became
Beavers with Fonz and I and Podge became
a blood donor. The rock bank Quill were
over at the Opera House again in April
and once again we were able to collect in
the foyer with O.B., Malarky and Fonz.

the group Quill and some of our gang

Charity week in
April was beautiful we couldn't have
asked for better weather and public, well
what can I say, once again they did us
proud and still had pennies to spare for
our Open Day later that month.
Following that we
teamed up with Sighthound Rescue our
sister charity run by Alison to do a
walk. Well it was another smashing day
and so exciting to meet new friends, I
think we all looked pretty impressive
walking along the Avenue, well not the
Avenue itself, 'cause the cars would have
hit us, but beside it, you know what I
mean!

A well earned rest
for everyone after the walk.
Wiz came to the
Guernsey Animal Show with Fonz, Harlea
and me this year, we get to go on a big
boat and stay in a posh hotel, it's
fantastic, then we meet up will all our
Guernsey pals both old and new, they all
come with their families to support us.
Crazy really, mum,
dad and Alison were worried that maybe we
wouldn't have many events to go to with
the Foire not being held and the West
Show only every other year, but hey, we
were inundated with offers and attended
loads of new fetes including St.
George's, St. Mary's family fete, that
was funny they put us next to the
rabbits, well O.B., thought he had died
and gone to heaven, next year mum says
she will have a word! Then there was the
Collectors Fair at St. Aubins, boy that
was a hot one, and St. Pauls fete, we
nearly got blown away at that one spent a
lot of time picking things up. Of course
there were still our regular venues at
the Royal Square for Animal Day and St.
Clement's fete and of course our second
Open Day which was held in October.
Fonz and I are
still doing our P.A.T. dogging and indeed
took part in a couple of charity walks
for them this year. It's quite strange
walking with lots of different breeds but
was good fun and we got lots of strokes
and helped raise money for the Pets as
Therapy. Mum is hoping that Gump will
join us soon but quite honestly he lives
on a planet of his own, still we will see
as Fonz and I could do with a break
sometimes as we are very busy guys.

Fonz, mum and me
visiting Phil at Clifton nursing home -
Phil is a very young 101 years old
Sponsorships once
again poured in and our new boy Gump
proved to be a popular choice, even as
far a field as Australia, mind you Pola
Bear also had a family that decided to
sponsor her and Peanut was not to be left
out plus my god-daughter chose Quinn and
Danny as their special pooches so we now
have five of our dogs with sponsor
families on the other side of the world.
September saw a
major event, Sam Nicolas, daughter of the
mad Donna and sister of the once hairless
Steven, decided to jump out of a plane. I
do sometimes wonder about humans, why
would anyone want to fall out of a plane
- still mum said we collected lots of
pennies which is good and it was a
fabulous night out and loads of our mates
came. Mum reckons she wants a volunteer
to absail down a building next year and
has asked me to request anyone crazy
enough that would like to attemp this
dare devil feat to get in touch - I won't
be offering my services, my four paws
stay firmly on the ground.
Now we are in
winter we are receiving requests to do
our Awareness Assemblies and have in fact
attended a couple of beavers and schools
already and mum and Alison, I am pleased
to say, have escaped swine flu. We find
it easier to do these events during the
winter months. Then of course we have
just finished our Online Charity Auction
where, once again, we joined forces with
Sighthound Rescue Jersey run as I said
earlier by our Aunty Al. This year proved
bigger and better than last and once
again all you two legged people gave us
such wonderful lots for people to bid on
it was so exciting.
On a sadder note
everyone at the Sanctuary would like to
pay tribute to the dogs that have left us
and some of our owners this year and gone
to join their pals on that famous Bridge.
Sadly dogs get old and some get sick but
this has really been a tragic year for
losses. We so miss our brothers

Jed - Eccles - Turk
- Flynn - Arrie
and we join in the
sadness of the loss of
Alison and John's

So folks that is
about it for another year but just before
I go I would like to introduce you to our
CHRISTMAS SPECIAL

Littlewoods
Littlewoods is 12
years old and had been in a home until
recently when his owners decided they
didn't want him anymore and dumped him in
a field - well what can I say, mum and
dad just knew he had to come and join our
gang and be our new brother - at least
he's not a show off like Gump!!!!

By the way this is
Gump personally I don't think he's that
good looking!!!
Mum says we can
have a little break over Christmas and
the New Year but because of the weather
we have a back log and need to collect
two more dogs on the 10th. We do not do
homes during the month of December but
these homes were arranged prior to that
and it's just the dreadful weather that
has prevented them from coming over. What
with Santa and the reindeer up in the sky
delivering pressies we need to keep our
plane out of the way but come January we
will hopefully be adding to the number of
greyhounds here in the Channel Islands.
This year has been
our record year and 25 greyhounds have
found their way over the ocean to take up
residence in the Islands and we hope we
can once again find lots of new families
to adopt my pals sitting around in
kennels in the U.K.
FINALLY ALL OF US
AT THE SANCTUARY WOULD LIKE TO SAY A
MASSIVE THANK-YOU ONCE AGAIN TO THE
PUBLIC FOR CONTINUALLY SUPPORTING US,
WITHOUT YOUR GENEROSITY WE COULD NOT HELP
OUR PALS TO FIND LOVING HOMES HERE IN THE
CHANNEL ISLANDS. WE HOPE THAT NEXT YEAR
WILL PROVE TO BE ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR
WE WISH YOU ALL A
HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND A WONDERFUL NEW YEAR
AND HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL SOON
