  GUNNER'S SPONSORED WALK

SATURDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER 2008

This walk was dedicated to our Gunner who we rescued from his 11 years of life in a shed last November. Crippled with arthritis and with failing kidneys this event is for all the Gunner's of the Greyhound world who have suffered through sheer neglect.

Now this is what you call a Greyhound Walk!!

37 greyhounds line up at the Cenotaph

Having watched the weather deteriorating during the course of the week and force 6 - 7 gales blowing in from the latest American hurricane - the prospect of our sponsored walk being dry was looking exceedingly unlikely.

We knew we couldn't cancel and the publicity from Radio Jersey had been amazing for which, once again, we sincerely thank them.

Anyway the motto of Greyhound Rescue is 'onwards and upwards' so off we set to meet everyone at Wests Centre for quarter to two. As we drove in, the rain was lashing down, the sky was black, and we were in a rotton old traffic jam - could it get any better!!!!

We drove into the square and were greeted by our owners and dogs, it was a magnificant sight and once our own dogs had been taken out of the van we had a total of 41 greyhounds most of which had never met each other before.

Everyone being introduced prior to the walk

Arrie, Danny, Dilly and Turk remained with Malcolm in the square and the rest of us, which not only included owners, but some of our sponsors, proceeded up Bath Street. Very soon people were stopping us to talk and to place money in our boxes. The rain had stopped and with the shelter of the buildings you would never have guessed it was blowing a gale out of town.

Our route took us down Queen and King Street and a quick stop off at Charing Cross gave the public time to pat the dogs before we reached our destination at the cenotaph. We all lined up for more pictures before we set off back from whence we came.

Just stopping for a quick breather and allowing the public to give the guys more strokes

It was about three by the time we all got back and everyone had some orange juice and the stars of the show, well earned drinks of water. More photos and more loves from the passers by took place before we called it a day at about 4ish.

.

Malarky, Peanut followed by Callie and Megan lead the group back to Wests Centre.

Who says 'gentlemen don't prefer blonds' Lord Claude with mum Lisa kneeling down tries his luck with the 'gals' Zara, Lolly, Twiggy and owner Eryn and Ruby being looked after by Courtney

Toots gets a special love from a little girl during the walk.

Ben gives his dog Dave a big hug.

O.B. and Caroline take a well earned rest

Once again Malcolm, Alison and I would like to thank all our owners for their continued support at not only the walk but at all other events. Their dogs looked wonderful and were a credit to them and it was so good to see the ones we hadn't met up with in a while - can't tell you how proud of them we are.

To Cate Hamilton for giving up her time to once again take some lovely photos which will be available on her site www.catehamilton.com and finally to Radio Jersey who give us so much coverage for our various events.
