OUR GUNNER - JUST 360 DAYS

10.09.1996 - 3.11.2008

It is always heart rendering to decide when the time is right to let a much loved pet go, but on Monday 3rd November at just after 4pm Mal and I had to make that dreaded decision about our lovely Gunner.

In a strange kind of way it's one of the hardest we have ever had to make as he would have been with us just one year on the 8th November. Those days would have been the happiest in his life, the 11 previous years spent cold, wet and in pain, living in the most awful conditions with hardly any human contact.

There is an emptiness in our house despite the other dogs, we so miss that face looking at us, waiting for his pills to be put in something special. The last week they were in chocolate eclairs and every day we would have tea and digestive biscuits together. We knew a few weeks ago that his kidney's were declining, they were bad when he arrived, but in the end it was his crippled legs that let him down.

He went so peacefully and all the others seemed to sense his passing, even Kentee the crazy G.S.D came and sniffed him to say goodbye.

I feel so angered that his life was worth nothing and no-one cared, we see so much of this and there is only so much we can do to help.

I would like anyone who enjoys a little bet every so often to think of what happens to these dogs when they finish racing and maybe instead of putting their money in the hands of the bookie, perhaps they could spare a thought for the welfare of these greyhounds who entertain them and maybe make a donation to help them have a life after racing and not lay rotting in a kennel or worse.

This year we have said goodbye to four of our lovely dogs, each one special in their own way, and we know that this will always be the case because of what we do, but that never makes it any easier.

Once again we thank everyone who sponsored Gunner despite knowing that he did not have much time left but still wanting him to be their special dog.

We know somewhere out there is another Gunner just waiting to join the Sanctuary dogs and we hope that we will be able to find him/her and give them a life after racing.

My brave Gunner
