DECEMBER

We've
hit the ton plus one!
Tuesday 11th
December, was a milestone in our homing
programme. We will always remember this day
as the day we brought our total of rehomed
greyhounds to l00 with the arrival of a
little black bitch to be called Bindy who was
delivered safe and sound to Guernsey ready to
start her new life with her family.

Bindy prior to
boarding her flight to Guernsey.
BUT it wasn't just
100, it was a ton plus one!! As luck would have
it we had had two enquiries about a month ago and
Bindy was accompanied by Key, also a black
dog who has come to Jersey to discover what
he has been missing whilst living in
kennels. This now brings our grand total to
101 dogs.

Key, ready to board his flight to Jersey.
With the dreadful
weather at the weekend and indeed yesterday we
had everything crossed for today and for once we
were blessed with a perfect day, no wind and
beautiful sunshine.
Bindy met her owners when the plane touched down
at about 11.30am and after a chat with her new
mum and dad, it was back on the plane to head for
Jersey, arriving at approximately 1.30pm.
Key's new owners were there to collect him and
take him home ready to start his retirement.
This year 17 dogs
have made the journey to both Jersey and
Guernsey. All are doing well, with their racing
days now a thing of the past and we are chuffed
to end the year having exceeded that magic figure
of 100.
Please note: It is not our policy to home dogs
in the weeks running up to Christmas unless they
have been booked prior to December.

Goodbye
to our dear friend Mr Padz

|
Wednesday
28th November 2007 was one of those days
that we always dread, receiving the news
of the parting of one of our homed
greyhounds. This lad in particular had a
very special place in our heart and we
share the loss of John and Alison's
special boy Paddy Padz. We are glad that
after 12 years in a kennel, he finally
found a cosy fireside to call his own.

De La Salle visit.
Last
month saw us visiting an 'all girls' school, so
this month it was the boys' turn. Mr Murry,
Headteacher of De La Salle Primary school allowed
us to bring our 'Awareness Roadshow' to the Key
Stage 2 assembly on Thursday 15th. We thoroughly
enjoyed the company of the boys who were very
willing to participate and eager to answer many
questions. They proved themselves to be extremely
knowledgeable and thank them and Mr Murry for an
enjoyable half hour.

Some
of the boys met the 'Famous Four' - Fonz, Rio,
Malarky and Harlea.

FAREWELL
TO COMPUTER HOUND!
It
is with a tinge of sadness that we say goodbye to
our black and white hound who has provided the
characteristic background to our website for many
months. Realistically, we always knew that the
text wasn't the easiest to read in his presence,
so we have decided to bid him farewell. We will
be making changes over the coming week, so please
bear with us.

We
pay tribute to SONIC, a friend of Greyhound
Rescue.

A couple
of months ago Mal was in the vets (a place we
frequent quite a bit having 12 dogs) and he met a
lady called Julie and her family. With them
was a big beautiful greyhound called Sonic.
They were moving to Jersey with her husband's job
and by chance were registering with our
vets. They had had Sonic for about three
years and it was lovely to meet them all, and we
made arrangements to get in touch when they were
settled. Julie, her two boys and Natalie
all called round and there was even talk of
getting Sonic a little friend.
Then
disaster struck, Julie phoned us a couple of
weeks ago to say Sonic was limping. Because of
our experience with Awesome we suggested that she
take him to the vet. The news was dreadful
this lovely young dog was diagnosed with
cancer. Julie, after consultation with the
vet, decided that they would take the leg but
during this operation Sonic suffered a massive
heart attack and died. Julie asked us if we
could put an obituary on our site in memory of
Sonic which, of course, we are only too pleased
to do. We would also like to say how
dreadfully sad we are that we only met Sonic the
once and didn't have the opportunity
of getting to know this gentle giant.
Our hearts go out to Julie and her
family who we know are devastated at the
loss of their very special pet. Go to our TRIBUTES page to read what
Julie has to say about Sonic.
We're
pleased to welcome Zorro to the island this
month. His racing name was 'Rustle the Wind'.
He's a December 02 dog who raced at Walthamstow.
Below you can see Zorro's first meeting with his
new Mum and Dad - cuddles and fuss all round.

A
BIG HOWDY TO COWBOY WHO HAS FLOWN IN.

Cowboy,
now known as Duke looking out for his new Mum and
Dad as he flies in to Guernsey!
For
those of you 'mature' enough to remember the most
famous cowboy of all time - John Wayne, we're
sure you will know his nickname - the Duke.
It's
with great pleasure that we introduce you to our
latest recruit 'Duke' (who was last week's dog of
the week). Rob and Sue, his new owners in
Guernsey could think of no better name for this
handsome 3 year old blue brindle who raced under
the name of 'Big Cowboy'.
Duke
arrived on the 27th August and we wish him a very
happy retirement with his new family.
Duke
is not our only pooch to be connected with John
Wayne, Rooster owned by Danny, Trish, Jacob and
Matthew was also named after a character played
by John Wayne in one of his famous movies.

Here's
Rooster.
Mouse
the one and only Sark greyhound.
Two
of our younger supporters George (8) and Harvey
(5) recently took a day trip to Sark with their
Mum. You can imagine their surprise when they
came face to face with a greyhound. This was
Mouse who we homed in 2001 when he was 2 years
old. George and Harvey were chuffed to bits to
meet Mouse and his owner Bernadette. They took a
photo of Mouse outside the Fleur du Jardin
restaurant where they met, this can be seen
below. We were pleased to hear that Mouse is
thoroughly enjoying life as the only greyhound on
Sark. Thanks George and Harvey for giving us this
update.

Mouse
living a laid back life in Sark.
Foot
& mouth update
Restrictions
have been imposed on dogs entering the island.
The Environment Department currently require
people arriving with pets to report to the
authorities. This is good news in that we can
continue to bring greyhounds over to Jersey.
However, depending on how the situation develops
in England this could change - we will continue
to keep you updated.
JULY

Animal
Day - 28th July

We
are still getting over the shock of completing
this event without any of that wet stuff falling
from the sky. It did look a bit dubious when we
were setting up at 8am and it was dull till the
afternoon, but all in all we were very lucky
seeing the kind of summer we have had this year.
Firstly
we would like to say we missed you Danny and wish
you a speedy recovery. It was lovely to see Meg
for the first time at one of our shows - she took
it all in her stride and hopefully will come
again. Callie her sister is a very shy greyhound
so had to stay at home with Dad. Dev arrived
early with his Mum and Dad and is getting a lot
more confidence, moreso when he has the gang with
him, well done Dev.
Finally,
the general public - what can we say? There are
so many charities out there and it is so
rewarding to be regarded as one that is worth
supporting so generously. It's incredible how
many visitors have greyhounds back home and are
thrilled to see Jersey doing their best for this
cause. It was a very successful day and we would
like to extend our thanks to Bridget Murphy for
organising the event.
Lolly
has arrived.

Yesterday,
18th July, we were very pleased to welcome Lolly
to Jersey to join her new family, including
Twiggy the greyhound who was homed last year.
The twins!! Lolly and Twiggy's first
meeting.

Lolly
and Twiggy with their two human sisters.
Teddy
update.
We
are always pleased to receive updates on all the
dogs we bring over. The newest kid on the block
is Teddy and I think the photos speak for
themselves.
Settling
in and having a great time? I think so...

Children
at Mont Nicolle school get industrial.
We
would like to thank the children of Bags, Tags
Incorporated - Scott, Max, Barney & Ben for
the letter we received informing us of how busy
they've been this term making bags and tags as
part of their industry topic. Their enterprise
must have been a great success as they kindly
donated their £30.00 profit to Greyhound Rescue.
Many thanks boys for your hard work and kindness.
Ocean
meets his sponsor family.
Ocean
was in the spotlight this month, when Gabe, Louis
and Bella, his foster family from England came to
meet him. There were smiles all round and we all
had an enjoyable afternoon.

Ocean
also received a very special card from his family
once they'd returned to England, he was very
chuffed - thank you.
Here's
Homer.
Another
greyhound has joined the Greyhound Rescue team.
Ok, slightly larger and a different shape than
the rest of the gang, but equally as popular as
you can see...

A
big thank you to the RGT Head office for
organising Homer's arrival and allowing him to
come and live in Jersey.

Rainbow
visits.
We
would like to thank the Rainbow leaders for
inviting us to their meetings. We had two most
enjoyable evenings and the dogs loved all the
fuss and attention they received from the girls.
Paris and Fonz would like to say a very BIG thank
you for being chosen as the Rainbow's two sponsor
dogs. We hope to receive some photos soon to
share with you.
Rainbows
here we come.
During
our week in town we met a Lady who runs
'Rainbows'. This is the younger version of
'Brownies'. They've asked us to attend 2 of their
evenings and they'd like to sponsor a dog. We're
looking forward to these visits and will report
back.
Another
sanctuary Pat Dog?
During
our Awareness week and our Guernsey trip, Fonz
proved himself to be a crowd puller. He nuzzles
into everyone and refuses to let them walk away
without one last love - so we decided he was
another ideal candidate as a Pat Dog. He was
assessed this week and we await confirmation.
We'll keep you posted.
