Sponsorship

If you already been on our website you will notice that under the section 'Things to consider before homing' we invite people who are unable to own a dog due to being out all day or other particular circumstances, to maybe sponsor a dog. Up until now we have suggested sponsoring a dog at one of our kennels in the UK, however having had a very special request we are pleased to launch our 'Sponsor a dog' scheme.

We are thrilled to announce that our very first local sponsor is Natasha. Following a phone call from Natasha's Dad asking to sponsor a dog locally, Natasha and her family came and met us at the Cider Festival at Hamptonne. She chose Rio as her sponsor dog.

How the scheme works...

We welcome sponsors of all ages and for £25 per year you will receive photos of your chosen dog, their history and pedigree, a badge and certificate of sponsorship plus a Speedy book (story about a fictional greyhound called Speedy). We invite you periodically to join us to walk with your sponsor dog and will let you know which events we will be attending should you wish to join us.

Listed below are greyhounds available for sponsoring and we provide you with a little detail on each of them. However if you'd rather meet them first before making your choice, please contact us.

Sponsoring one of these dogs will in turn help to keep others less fortunate than themselves. Kennelling costs, food and veterinary bills all need to be covered and any funds received will be sent direct to our Retired Greyhound Trust Head Office to help with these costs.

SQUIBBY

Squibby is our longest resident. He is 15 years old and has been with us for over 8 years. He is white and brindle and not a big dog. He has a steel plate in his leg due to an accident prior to arriving at the Sanctuary. Although he is an 'oldie' he still has plenty of go in him on the beach and is also very affectionate.

TURK

He is very much a Mummy's boy. He doesn't say a lot but enjoys his walk. He has been with us for 6 years and is 11 years old. He is a medium sized white and brindle dog. Turk joins his brothers and is now a registered P.A.T. dog.

FLYNN

He is our shy boy who has been with us 4 years He is 10 years old and a big brindle boy. Flynn misses out on the events we do because he is so timid, but once he gets to know you he is very loveable and gives a paw.

RIO

At 7 years old, Rio is one of our 4 black beauties. In March he will have been with us for 3 years. He thinks he is braver than he is and fancies himself as a bit of a 'Jack the Lad' . Because he has greyed quite early he does look older than he is. Together with his four others brothers, Rio has now been registered as a P.A.T. dog (Pets as Therapy).

MALARKY

The baby of the group. He's 6 and has been with us since mid 2006. He's a big brindle dog - not at all demanding but will come up to be loved, though is not pushy. Bit of a male model! Recently he was registered as a P.A.T. dog.

ARRIE

Arrie was our 3rd Christmas Special arrival. He joined our clan on the 14th December and is an older bloke of 11 years old. He's what they call blue brindle but unfortunately he has faded over the years. Even being the 'new kid on the block' he has fitted in no problem at all considering he's spent all his life in kennels. He is such a friendly lad, loves loads of attention. He has ligament damage to his front leg which means his exercise is limited and also has a couple of corns. Arrie might not be able to be walked but he would relish being cuddled and having loads of strokes. He has adapted to home life so well considering his time in kennels.

FONZ

Fonz was with his previous family for 15 months and proved himself to be a loveable friendly dog living with two children and a baby. He would sit on your lap if he could and for a youngster (just 6 years old) is a lazy old pooch. During a visit to a family member an unguarded moment led to Fonz having access to one of their cats. Fortunately the cat was o.k. but the husband wanted the dog returned. This was dreadfully upsetting as all the other members of the family including the owner of the cat did not want to part with the dog. Unless a dog is homed specifically as 'cat friendly' precautions should always be taken. Fonz will stay with us and become a sponsor dog and one of our 4 black beauties.

DANNY

Danny is 7 years old but looks older as he has greyed quite early. He is an affectionate dog who unfortunately suffers from really bad corns and a damaged shoulder left over from his racing days. He loves to be fussed over but can't walk too far. His girlfriend is our German Shepherd Kentee and the two of them play endlessly neither one of them giving in gracefully.

O.B.

Big 6 year old white and black dog. Can be quite shy and does like his own space - spends most of his time on his back with his legs in the air. Bit of a thief quite partial to bread and butter sandwiches that are made with the whole loaf and the whole tub of butter!!!!!!

ECCLES

Medium sized 9 year old white and black dog. Came to us in November 2007 as one of our Christmas specials. Spent all his life in kennels. Bit of a live wire catching up with nine years of kennel life.

GUNNER

Such a sad case - white and brindle 12 year old riddled with arthritis having lived his whole life in a shed having never been anywhere but in this filthy place - didn't even race. Painfully shy with kidney problems as well as the arthritis. This Christmas special has no life story as he's had no life. If you do sponsor remember he is not in the best of health.

SILKS

Silks joined us in February at just under two years old. A delightful cat friendly puppy really. Loves to be cuddled and played with. We don't have any background on her other than she probably never raced. We will try and get more information but if we turn nothing up she will have to be your sponsor dog without a story.

DILLY

Dilly, a sheer pleasure. At 13 years old this is yet another greyhound who has come without a story. We only know that she was discovered lying beside her owner on Christmas Day 2007 - the lady had unfortunately passed away. She is absolutely no trouble at all and we are so pleased we took her on.

KELLA

A lovely brindle bitch aged 5 who came to us earlier in 2008.  Kella's a bit shy at first but very loveable.  She can be nervous around loud noises so is a girl that definitely likes the quiet life.

RUBY

Another sanctuary girl, a loveable 6 year old fawn bitch.  Big brown appealing eyes. Like her sister Kella, she's a little shy till she gets to know you.

JED

Jed, big black and beautiful.  This boy will be 4 in August 2008.  Sadly he is extremely nervous but we are hoping that in time he might cope with his lack of trust a little better.  He is not very good with men and somewhere in his life has been severely attacked as he has bad scars on his ear and back legs.  He does enjoy a cuddle but has to know you quite well before you get that privilege.

If you would like to sponsor one of our residents, or would like to raise funds or help in any other way, please email or give us a call. We will be only too pleased to discuss a way in which you could support our cause.
