TRACK
CLOSURE = MORE HOMELESS DOGS

The East End
sees the closure of Walthamstow
Greyhound Stadium first established
in 1933. Many would see this old
building as an icon of that part of
London but it has been sold to developers
and will cease to operate at the end of
August 2008.
Some of the trainers will seek other
tracks to operate from but some will call
it a day which means we will desperately
be looking for homes for the dogs who
will not be racing
anymore. We therefore
hope that some of our future homes will
be from this famous track.
Over the past
12 years that Greyhound Rescue
Jersey has been in operation 20 ex
racing greyhounds from Walthamstow
have found their way into the hearts of
families both in Jersey and the other
Channel Islands and we would very much
like to add a few more. We
would hope that amongst the list
forwarded to us from our Head Office,
there is a greyhound with' please forward
to Jersey' written on its kennel.
Maybe you will recognise some of these
names, sadly some have now passed on but
we remember our Walthamstow dogs as:
Awesome, Beauty, Casper,
Cleo, Floyd, Huckleberry, Jake,
Jakey, Jet, Lily, Malarky, Paddy,
Phantom, Pongo-Pongo, Ranger, Rebel,
Skye, Squibby, Twiggy and
Zorro.
Obviously the more tracks that close down
the greater the pressure is to rehome
dogs but thankfully in the long term less
tracks mean fewer racing dogs and fewer
racing dogs mean fewer homes to find
which is good news for the constantly
full to bursting homing groups and rescue
centres.
