DO
YOU REALLY WANT A DOG OR DO YOU JUST LIKE
THE IDEA OF HAVING A DOG? ...
...There is a
difference!!!!!!!!
Firstly, no-one can
ever know what to expect from any dog, be
it a purpose bought pup or a rescue dog,
so we need you to think very carefully
before committing yourself and your
family to hopefully ten or more years
depending on the age you acquire your
pooch.
This little face
would melt most animal lovers
Racing greyhounds
have led a completely different life to
any other breed. They have lived in
kennels since puppies and have never had
the luxury of a warm loving home. They
have had to work for a living. This is
where the ahhh factor comes in but
unfortunately that is not enough. Of
course most animal lovers will be deeply
touched by some of the dreadful stories
they read about some of the cruelty
associated with greyhound racing and the
awful tales of what happens to these dogs
when they finish racing but what happens
to that sympathy vote when your newly
acquired greyhound takes a while to
settle! Are you still going to give him
the sympathy vote then?
We try very hard to
find out the background of these dogs but
kennel life is so completely different
and there can sometimes be a period
ofadjustment to family life. We find,
unfortunately, that some people cannot go
the distance and give up sometimes at the
first hurdle, this is so very
disappointing for all concerned.
Happily most of the
greyhounds we home remain with their
families, many owners acquire a second
and indeed when, they lose their dog they
return to us for another.
Sadly we sometimes
have people who find that it is not a bed
of roses and it is all too much for them
- having to find someone to look after
their dog when they go away, not being
able to just go out when they please, the
odd accident, walking whether it be
freezing, raining or a beautiful day when
maybe you would prefer to be on the
beach. Insurance needs to be taken into
consideration but 'Oh dear I forgot to
take out a policy and can't afford to pay
the bill' - yep it all sounded like a
good idea at the time BUT ..........
So we ask you to
consider all aspects of owning any dog.
Hopefully this will not put you off as if
you talk to any of our owners they will
all confirm that life has taken on a new
lease and they can't imagine being
without this graceful breed.
